To the Editor of the Hawke's Eaij Times.
Sir, —Some months ago an advertisement appeared in the papers of Hawke’s Bay, signed by G. S. Cooper, Esq., (R.M. and a lot more capital letters) which announced to the public that he, said G-. S. Cooper, had fenced in that part of the public road which crosses his sheep run, and shortly afterwards (having occasion to travel that way) I was put to the inconvenience of following along the outside of the said fence over sandy hills, as it effectually shut me out of the road. Well, (I thought,) our worthy Superintendent will have this altered before I return, but although this was in October last, I find that it is not so, but, to my surprise, that this law administrator is, up to this time, permitted himself to break the law by stopping up a public road, and compelling all travelling that way to go far out of their course, and yet at last they have to pass through that same fence. How Big Bill, Blaze Away Jim, Long Tom, and other bullock-punchers, have put up with it, I do not know, it is bad enough for horses, but much worse for teams, to take such a road, and I would like to know whether our energetic engineer has reported the case to his Honor, or if the fearful lot of capital letters placed after Mr. Cooper’s name has so terrifying an effect upon him as to deter him from doing so. I remain, Sir, Yours, A TRAVELLER.
