Provisional Secretary : —John G. Kinross, Esq. o THE object of the proposed Company is to pi’ocure a screw steamer of a capacity and draught of water suited for the requirements of the Port of Napier. The great success which has attended the working of steamers in the coasting trade of Hew Zealand has demonstrated the fact that such a trade can he profitably followed, and it is believed that the Province can now very well maintain a steamer of her own. The want of a suitable local steamer has been severely felt for the past eighteen months—ilockowners and others having been thereby shut out from the high markets existing both in Otago and Auckland. The uncertainty of the xoyage precludes shipping by sailing vessels, while the accommodation afforded by the mail steamer, irrespective of the danger and delay of loading in the roadstead, is inadequate. The steamer which this company proposes io purchase shall bo one of about 300 tons, with a broad beam and light draught of water, so as to enter the harbour at all states of the tide. Her engines’ power to be sufficient to steam head to wind. As the conveyance of stock may bo expected to form a verj' profitable source of revenue, —she will be fitted up with moveable stalls for cattle and sheep. Independent of the outlet which such a vessel would give for fat stock, the growing importance of the Port of Napier requires it for the development of the goods and passenger traffic. This Company may with confidence calculate on receiving the liberal subsidy for steam purposes voted by the Provincial Council of Hawke’s Hay. It is proposed that this company shall have a capital of £IO,OOO in 500 shares of £2O each, with power to issue new shares if necessary. The qualification for voting at the election of the first Board of Directors shall be the payment of the first call of £2 per share. Shareholders shall be allowed to vote by proxy.
