LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The Courts (Runanga) of His Majesty King Potatau 11. have been rather busy lately. In addition to the usual equitable business, a Court has been held at Waipukurau for reinvestigation of the case King v. Morena, arising out of the death of Eruka some five weeks ago. On that occasion an inquest was held by the Coroner and a jury of Europeans, who found a verdict of Natural Death, or something to that effect. The Natives were not satisfied, suspicion attaching to Morena, who “ was said” to have threatened to kill the deceased. The Court held on the 2nd instant decided that the accusation against Morena was unfounded, and fined the accuser (Tikuku) for false witness. The matter will now be considered settled. Another important case adjudicated was one oi crim. con., the male delinquent a leading chief and Kaiwhakawa (magistrate or judge); and the “ frail fair” one of the widows of a deceased chief of high rank.
