HOW happens it that the Government and people of Napier patronise strolling players and mountebanks from the other colonies, who style themselves “Professors”? Now, people of reason must know that I am a Professor of the high, noble, and dark and mystic art of Chimney Sweeping, which said art saves a deal of houses and property from catching fire. If people will not support me in my professional capacity as chimney sweeper, nightman, and bellman, beside other minor capacities, such as shoe black, chemist’s assistant, &c., but will throw their money away in Tom-foolery, I, the first householder in Napier, shall, for their ingratitude, retire from business. But the first chimney that catches fire through neglect, I shall try and get the owner thereof fined. Therefore, you insurance agents that reside in Napier, I hope you will study this and protect me in my professional capacity. I remain, yours truly, EGBERT HOLLIS.
TO SUBSCRIBERS AND ADVERTISERS. Consequent, we presume, on our venturing to issue two numbers of the Times instead of one each week, our contemporary has announced his intention of publishing on Wednesdays and Saturdays, as also a half-sheet on Mondays. As we are inclined to think the change is intended, if possible, to forestall us, and to prevent our gaining that position to which we are fast culminating, we have determined to alter Thursday’s issue to FRIDAY, by which alteration we shall be able to afford our town subscribers a day’s later news. This arrangement will take efiect from the present date, and on FRIDAY, the 30th Inst., an issue of the Times will be published.
