We regret to have to announce the death of the beloved wife of our esteemed Superintendent, which sad event occurred just as the old year died away, as though the spirit of that sweet lady passed on the wings of the expiring year to that far bourne from whence no traveller returns. The natural gloom engendered by this event at the festive season of the year, when, all hearts are light and elated with hopes for the future, is, in some measure, ameliorated by the marks of sympathy and condolence shown by the inhabitants of Napier and its environs, the shops in the town were partly closed, public business was suspended at an early hour, and a great number of people of all classes gathered to show their respect for and sympathy with Capt. Carter, by attending the mortal remains of his admirable lady to her last long home.
