LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Thatcher, the wit and vocalist, gave his first entertainment last evening, to a wellfilled house, notwithstanding the rainy weather. His hits in the local songs drew forth loud and hearty applause, and fully established his reputation as a ready satirist. Madame Vitelli gave several favorite ballads, which drew forth loud plaudits and encores, being most ably seconded by Mr. Fleetwood at the pianoforte. We have but space for a brief notice, and must content ourselves with saying that the entertainment was the best we have had in Napier for many a day. Thatcher appears again to-night, in new local songs, and without doubt he will have a large audience. The Weather. —Copious and welcome showers fell during yesterday, filling the Napier water-butts, and doing great service to the farmers' crops, and grass. Maori Case.— At'the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, the native accused of stealing a pair of trousers from the store of Mr. Boddington, of Clive, appeared in answer to the charge. Mr. Boddiugton, who was the only witness, stated that the native came into his store, whilst he was busy at the desk; that he sat upon the counter and directly afterwards took a pair of trousers from the shelf, put them under his arm, and bounded outside. Mr. Boddington followed, accused him of stealing, and gave him into the hands of the police. The Maori might have seen him (prosecutor) when taking the trousers. Defendant in defence, stated that he merely took the trousers outside to look at them. The Bench, dismissed the case, as the evidence against the Maori was insufficient to warrant a committal.
