Speaking of the proposed line of electric telegraph through the Middle Island, the Kelson Examiner, says ; —“ The cost of carrying the scheme out from Nelson to the Bluff, is estimated roughly at £20,000. The distance is, in round figures, 500 miles, taking the coast in Nelson and Marlborough ; and, as the number of stations ■would be small, the whole, on a modest scale, may be constructed £4O per mile average. The line from Hobart Town to Launceston cost £52 per mile, some years ago. Of the above distance, about 50 miles are in Southland, 100 in Otago, 170 in Canterbury, 100 in Marlborough and 50 in Nelson.
