WRECK OF THE “CITY OF SYDNEY.”

Great excitement was felt in town on Friday night the 7th instant, when intelligence arrived (per Hunter steamer), of the total loss of the A.S. N. Company’s steamer the Cift/ of Si/dneg , off Green Capo ,at 2 a.m. on Thursday. The Passengers, nealy one hundred in number bad all retired to rest when the vessel struck violently on the rocks. An attempt was made to back the engines, but fortunately—as the event proved—without success. The passengers were promptly got into the boats and conveyed to the nearest, point of the land where they were all safely landed The captain, engineer carpenter steward mate and quarter master were the last to leave the ship which fell over on the starboard side and went down in deep water before they could get quite away. To the calm intrepidity displayed by all parties involved in this disaster and to the prompt and judicious course of action carried out after the mischances, by Captain Moodio (aid by Captains Ashore and Garrard, who hap, ened to be on board), the preservation of the passengers and crew must under Providence bo attributed. Captain Ashore was very effectively seconded by the saloon passengers in landing "the women and children. A seaman named Alfred' Eggar also honorably distinguished himself. As soon as ail parties were safely lauded fires were Indited round which the women and children congregated and dried their wet clothing. Boats were despatched at daylight to Twofold Bay for assistance and on their arrival a messenger was sent to' Merritnbula to report the wreck. The Hinder, under the command ot Captain Sullivan, at once proceeded to the neighborhood of the wreck and brought oil'the parties that had been temporarily left there —first to Twofold Bay and thence afterwards to Sydney. The Hinder arrived at the Phoenix Wharf on Friday night at eight ocloek. It is estimated that the vessel and cargo were worth at least £26 0t)0. The Volunteers returning from” the Melbourne rille match were on board and have lost several rides through the wreck of this vessel —the second A.B.is. Company’s have lost in one month.
