LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The I* pk aw a Case.— Our contemporary Las explained the particulars of this case, but we are informed (on native authority) that the case appeared likely to cause a breach of the peace between the sections of the Ngatikahungunu, two leading chiefs having “ mutually threatened” to brain each other. The real importance of the case consists in the fact that the culprit is a slave, and his victim a young lady of the highest rank, hence the anxiety of certain of the “ Maori nobility'’ to take the life of the offender. The case, meanwhile, has been referred to Waikato, and, on the decision of those in authority there, in conjunction with “Kuraitiana,” (who is representing Heretaunga in the great meeting of king Potatau’s supporters) will the issue of the case depend. In all probability that decision will be for “ peace at present.” THE ANNIVERSARY HOLIDAYS Were held on Monday and Tuesday last, on the former of which days the places of business were closed, but on the latter only partially so ; and both days may be characterised as flat and .spiritless ; indeed had not private individuals made some exertion towards getting up a Regatta and a Rail, the Holidays would have passed off without anything worthy of notice.
