LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The Anniversary Holidays, as notified in a Gazette published yesterday, will be held on Monday and Tuesday, the 3rd and 4th November, instead of the Ist and 2nd. A subscription list has been opened towards a regatta and Rural Sports, which is progressing favorably. The native, Netane te Huiki, who was tried for the murder of his wife at the last sitting of the Supreme Court, was sent per Queen to Otago, the passage-money being subscribed by some of our townspeople. A Shaksperian Reading was given by his Honor Mr. Justice Johnston, on Thursday evening last, in aid of the Choral Society. The reading consisted of selections from King John, which were attentively listened to by a respectable audience. We have to acknowledge the receipt of No. 3 of the New Zealand Magazine, in which we find an improvement on the preceding numbers. *
