WANTED ! WANTED ! TO POLITICAL SCHEMERS AND OFFICE-SEEKERS. WANTED, a Responsible Ministry for the Colony of Now Zealand; to consist of sis gentlemen of blood and birth. The duties are, first and foremost, to obey .Sir George Grey’s orders in everything ; to aid him in all his plans for the “Management” of the Natives and the '‘Government” of the colonists. Secondly, while obeying “ their master” in all things, to do so in such a manner as to make the verdant ones believe they (the officials) arc independent, and bv so doing make the Colony responsible for Sir George Grey’s actions, and for tlte cost of trying the great experiment of buying leave for the whites to dwell in this Island. The qualifications necessary are an adaptability to circumstances, readiness to change their views whenever loss of office would follow a dilfcrent course, no fastidious scruples about telling a few ilbs, either viva voce or in official reports, or what is much more suitable for officials, ability to mystify a question till the chief points are lost to view, and to gloss over a few “ awkward facts” so as to make the worse appear the better side. Fluency of tongue is also desirable, as it is very convenient when “ starring” in the Provinces to bo able to bamboozle a lot of country dolts by an oration, at the end of which those who listened most carefully arc puzzled to know what it has all been about. To be able to eat the leek* without showing any dislike to such food is also a good recommenda(ion. The emoluments are £SOO a year for each head (vote), with a good number of chances of providing for a friend, or rewarding a supporter, by making a “vacancy,” and then filling it up. A political hangcr-on may occasionally be pensioned olfby a “sinecure,” as patronage must be judiciously managed to maintain “political position,” and the public, i.e., the taxpaying portion of it, will be obliged to bear the expense. Gentlemen possessing the above and sundry other qualifications will do well to apply early, at the Big House, Wellington. N.B.—No man who values political consistency need apply. A believer in Maori nobility not ■objected to. * Retract their own words.
