NOMINATED SUPERINTENDENT’S BILL.

In the House of Representatives on Thursday evening, Mr. Fitz Gerald moved the second reading of this Bill. He dwelt at considerable length upon the benefits which the passing of the Bill would ensure, but he cautiously guarded himself against referring to any particular case in which the present system had worked injuriously. He pointed out, that when a man once succeeded in getting himself elected as Superintendent, he could maintain himself in that ofiice, and no one could root him out, if he only wished to make use of the means which his office placed within his reach. The motion ■was seconded by Mr. Watt. Major Richardson, in a short and humorous spech, spoke against the motion, moving, as an amendment, that the Bill be read that day six months. The late Premier seconded the amendment, which was also supported by Mr. Moorhouse. Mr. Wilson rose to a point of order, and made a short and humorous speech—keeping the House iu continual merriment—in favour of the second reading of the Bill; and Mr. O Neill and Mr. Colenso spoke in favour of the measure. Mr. Thompson felt it his duty to oppose the Bill, and Mr. Ward made an able speech also against it. Mi’. Harrison considered the measure a piece of retrograde legislation ; when, on the motion of Mr. Carleton, seconded by Mr. J. C. Richmond, the debate was adjourned to Tuesday next. —New Zealand Advertiser, August 16.
