GREAT RESULTS OF THE OPENING OF THE GOLD FIELDS.
Several vessels returned yesterday from Coromandel, all bringing the most exciting news. We saw a nugget of quartz and gold, valued at 442, which had been picked up on No 12 claim, Ring’s creek, on Paul’s land, which was opened on the Ist instant to the prospectors; and we have been told by a gentleman just returned from Coromandel, who was himself a gold Commissioner in Victoria, that the nugget in question was a mere bagatelle to what was on board the Caroline gun boat, which has been stationed at Coromandel. The nugget which is considerably water-worn, was taken out of the bed of the creek which the miners are examining to the depth of about two feet through the shingle. The quartz is a reddish colour, and massive structure, with the gold in streaks or points visible all over it. The prospectors are all in high spirits ; and the quartz reefs are equally promising with the detached nuggets. We have heard that £2OO has been offered for a share in one of the companies’ claims which were recently alloted. Mr. 1C even's company has been established on the terms proposed by him, all the shares offered for sale have been taken up ; and machinery for crashing the quartz is to be sent for from Melbourne by the present mail.— Aucklander, July 1.
