AUCKLAND.
CFrom a correspondent.) 23rd Juno, 18(32. Tlie Governor returned from the South about ten days since, and lias not been idle. He called at Coromandel on his way back, and was unsuccessful in purchasing the block, lie next started for the North, to Wangaroi, in lOI.S. Harrier, visited the belligerent natives, and in course of a few hours put an end to the fighting. The dispute is now to be settled in Auckland by arbitration in October next, after the session of the General Assembly is over. He again visited Coromandel, and returned within 18 hours, when it was reported he had purchased the district and only returned for the money to pay for it. He did leave again (the second time) within six hours of his return, and is said to have taken £IO,OOO with him, and a quantity of flour, sugar, Ac., to complete the transaction. This bears a semblance of truth, but has not yet been confirmed. I myself believe it ’ to be pretty correct, and expect to hear by to-morrow that the whole district is thrown open for a gold-field. Definite news will no doubt, however, reach you by this mail, as it does not leave for two days yet. There has been an attempt to
form a Quartz-Crushing Company, although not successful yet; still the move will result in the formation of a company before long. Auckland lias never had brighter prospects than it has at the present time ; I believe the current of prosperity is now turning in its favor. There are no less than five or six threestorey brick and stone buildings in process of erection in Queen-street for warehouses ; and in a short time I believe Queen-street will vie with some of the finest streets in any of the Australian towns.
