AUCKLAND.
Census. —The census of the colony was taken in December last. The official returns have not yet been published, but we are enabled to give a statement of the more important results of the census of the Province of Auckland, which may be relied on. The European popidation numbered 24,420, viz: —Males, 83,424-; females, 10,286. These numbers are exclusive of the military and their families, which may probably number from four to five thousand. The number of acres fenced was 112,313, of which there were in grass or crop, 75,961. The returns of stock are as follows : Horses, 5,631; Cattle, 36,481; Sheep, 67,800; Pigs, 11,461, At the same period, the number of acres fenced was 90,376, of which 60,201 were in grass or under crop. These returns show such a steady and yet rapid rate of progression as will satisfy the most sceptical that, under the peculiar circumstances in which this province is placed, the system of dealing with the Waste Lauds now established and in operation here attains its avowed objects, the attraction of population and the promotion of settlement. —New Zealander.
