To the Editor of the Hawke's Bay Times.
“ I hope I don’t intrude,” Mr. Editor, but I’ve just dropped in to enquire if the report now in circulation is true concerning Mr. Russell, the Commissioner? I mean that he lias received instuictions to proceed against the following list of J. P’s., viz.— A. H. Russell H. R. Russell G. S. Cooper Capt. Newman P. Russell J. D. Canning J. D. Ormond for occupying Native laud contrary to the Land Purchase Ordinance? And that he has publicly stated his determination to put a stop to this illegal practise, even though his Own son should be amongst the number ? Paul Pry. Napier, 14th June, 1862. [We cannot say that we have heard the report to which our correspondent alludes, but we see no reason why it should not bo so. Justice is supposed to be no respecter of persons, and for aught we can see, a Justice of the Peace, eleven a Commissioner’s son, are as liable to the penalties of transgression as any other person. —Ed.H.B.T.]
