THE NATIVE WAR IN THE NORTH.
(Frorn the IVangarei correspondent of the Daily Southern Cross.J I am barely in time to write you a few hurried lines regarding the native tight going on about twelve or fifteen miles from this settlement, as the Mavis is about ready to sail for Auckland. Teraurau is anxious to keep the fighting as far away from the settlement as possible. On the 23rd May. Mattiu, with about two hundred or three hundred men, started by a circuitous route to the hill Pukiatua. Terarau, with about a hundred and seventy or two hundred, started to intercept him, and prevent him crossing the Wairua. On the morning when the messenger left, who gave me these tidings, it was expected that tiie two parties would fight during the day, as Martin, if at Pukiaau, will have crossed the line marked out. and if any of tiie parties cross the line, it is a challenge to fight. Parties of armed men are now in the settlement (Wangarei) on their way to join Teraurau. iesterday (22nd May - ) two casks of powder were carried through to Teraurau's camp by a party of natives on their way to join him. The three men who were wounded last week are doing weli. They extracted the hall from Atria’s wound with a pen knife. Adam Clark, a Bay of Islands assessor, is said to he among Mattiu’s fighting men encouraging the fighting. Military.— The 70th regiment, we learn, will commence their march tins morning for the camp at Otahuhu. On Friday, the 40th will commence their march for Auckland ; to be followed at intervals by the 65th, 12th, and 14th. Through untiring exertions on the part of the soldiery, the road is nearly completed, and besides a detachment to he stationed in the stockade commanding the Waikato river, there are parties to be left along the line of road, during the winter months, to keep it in order. —New Zealander•, June 4.
