CORRESPONDENCE.

To the 'Editor of the MawJce's JBay Times. Sir, —Can you inform the public to whom they are indebted for the remarkably clear address said to have been presented to His Excellency on his landing in Napier? Is it a specimen of the mental calibre of the collective wisdom of the town? Or is it the production of the junior class at the Napier College? Or has the valuable document been mutilated by the “ imps” in the office of your contemporary? There appears to be some misty allusion to the “ policy” with -which the name of Sir G. Grey is likely to be identified, although it is hard to say what is the moaning of the “present grave circumstances",

and “ the mode in which Ilis Excellency was appointed” ; unless it signifies the establishment of the “ Maori kingdom”, and the substitution of “ rununga law” for English, or worse than all, the “ kind of justice” exemplified in Mr. Heslop’s barn. Perhaps the missing portion of the address contained some observations on “ Puketapu justice”, or Puketapu awards, as that is the “ keystone” to the arch which diplomacy has raised at our expense in the colony ; or perhaps ■some remarks anent Mr. John Smith, and his cheque ; otherwise called “ the easiest method of obtaining a favorable decision from an incorruptible Maori kaiwhakawa .” Yours, TUTUA April 28, 18G2.
