LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The Bishop of Wellington preached in the newly erected Church on Sunday morning last. A very large congregation listened with attention to an excellent discourse.
New Banks. —The public generally, but particularly the mercantile portion of it, will be glad to learn that during the week two new Banks have opened for business, and are now in operation. The New Zealand Company are occupying temporary premises in Em-erson-street, and the New South Wales Company have bought the property adjoining Mr. Browne’s drapery warehouse.
Sale of Crown Lands. —Pursuant to advertisements, this sale took place on Monday last. There was but a thin attendance and but few sections were disposed of. There were no purchasers for any of the sections in the Pohui Bush. In the Tukuwaru bush, three were sold at upset price, the others, with the exception of Nos. 1 and 10, were disposed of at a nominal advance of from 10s. to d£3 a section. One section only was sold in the Eparaima block at upset price, and none in the rural sections of Motuotaraia and Wallingford, although a few were taken up after the sale.
We have to acknowledge the receipt of Mr. Beardworth’s little work on the “ Geography of New Zealand.” Although intended especially for the use of youth, it will be found useful to all as a valuable pamphlet for reference.
