On her nassno-e from Auckland, which place she left on the 11th nit., she called at the Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay with goods and passengers. She put into Wangawai on the 25th from bud weather.
The s.s. Storm Bird arrived on Friday last also, after the short passage of 29 hours from Wellington, during which called and stayed two hours at Castle Point. She was the welcome bearer of the January English mail. Great fears are entertained that the missing December mail is lost. The Fancy has had a fine and quick passage
from Wellington. She left on Friday morning about ten o’clock, sighted the Sea Serpent off Black Head, and arrived in harbor on Saturday afternoon at four o’clock.
Thb Victoria entered the harbour on Sunday morning. She loft Otago on Tuesday, the 25th ult., and experienced head winds to Banks’ Peninsula, thence she had Southerly winds, and has made altogether a good passage. Off the Peninsula she passed the Zillah and Success, both for Auckland. The latter had 40 passengers on board, intending to winter and “ prospect” at Coromandel.
H.M. gunboat Caroline has had a boisterous passage from the Kauau. She left Auckland on the 19th ult., on Government service to the Kauau, left there on the 23rd, and experienced very bad weather. After considerable tossing, had to take shelter, and anchored at the Ecst on the 25th. She left again next day, and again met with bad weather; put into Wangawai on the 29th, weighed again on the 31st, and came into harbor on the Ist inst. Captain Marks reports having spoken the Canterbury, schooner, from Otago to Auckland. Her decks were crowded with passengers, and the schooner was then about 25 miles to the Southward of the East Cape. We are further informed by Captain Marks that His Excellency. Sir G. Grey has bought the island of Kauau from the late mining company. Great improvements we believe are intended to be made on the island. Already a large number of Cape rabbits have been introduced, and deer, with other animals and birds, are shortly expected to arrive, and will be put upon the island. Perhaps a more suitable spot for the purpose of acclimatisation could not be found.
The fine ship Chapman, Capt. Harland, arrived in Auckland, from London, on the 17th nit. She had 72 passengers on board.
