A A kwviakkki' Ixcidknt.— On tiie Heath, lately, at ewmarket, might have been scon a private soldier, whoso countenance was very much bronzed by the Indian sun. Few, however, recognized in the person of this private soldier the °oncerenowned Harry Bell, the successful Jockey of r augh-a-Ballagh when ho won the St. Ledger and afterwards the Cecsarcwitch, the jockey of Ecfraction when she won the balls—in short 'the well-known and still remembered Harry Bell. The success of those days gone by was too much for the young jockey, as success before now has been m its elfect with greater men, and he gave wav to habits that we shall forbear further reference to. bufficc it to say, that, in a moment of madness, for it could have beeen nothing else, he enlisted in a marching regiment. This was sis years ago. Since that he passed through all the vicissitudes ot a soldier’s life, by an Indian campaign when India was in a state of revolt. After tais i ongh service lie came homo with his regiment and upon a furlough of twenty-one days visited Ins wife and relatives at hiewmarket the week be--ore last. As soon it was known that the jockey soldier was in Ivewmarket the chivalrous owner of the £ ‘ Chocolate Jacket” sent for him, and told him there was now a great dearth of good jockeys, and that if he would promise for the future to keep himself steady his discharge shouldj bo procured. The promise was given in the pre.sonco of Boll’s father-in-law, and the necessary stens have been taken for placing him again on the rollcall of our best jockeys, llis generous benefactor his not only given him the “ Chocolate Jacket,” but has also promised to obtain him other mounts.
