Census.— From our contemporary we extract the following information touching the population, &c., of the Province : -the Census returns so far as this province is cencerned, are now completed. The 1'ollowiu"- is the return of population : ° IVf olna
Total, (exclusive of military) 2,611. Disparity of the sexes 723 —Of the above number, that division of the province known as the electoral district of Clive has 1131, and that as the district of Napier, 1177. Of the latter number, 921 reside in the town of Napier. The returns shew an increase over the census taken in April, 1860, by the Provincial Government, of 272 souls, of whom 181 are resident in Napier. The increase is chiefly apparent in the column for children under 5 years of gae. Under the heads of place of birth, occupation, and religious denomination, there is no material difference since last returns. In the first, however, 839 are set down as of Now Zealand birth, which was not provided for in the provincial form. Under the last, there are set down 1 Swedenborgians, 2 changeable, 1 Duddhist, and several undecided—evidences, wc presume, of practical ioking. The number of acres fenced is 31,780, of which 2123 arc under crop generally, and 3721 under sown grass. In these respects a great change is apparent since last returns, when the number of acres in crop was 978, in grass, 1562, and fenced 10,695. The schedule of live stock shows the following numbers —horses, 1782 (190 over former return) horned cattle, 8320 (2690 over former return) ; sheep, 312,159 —shewing an increase of 89,357. Goats and pigs, on the other hand, have greatly decreased in number, whilst poultry arc sct°down at nearly 10,000. Wap. Xing to Illegal Squatters.—A certain block of land at Wangawai, after being previously leased to three or four parties, and the lease as often broken, was rented a month since by a Mr. Corbin, who, on the strength of the agreement, shipped, on Monday last, per Victoria and Dolphin, 500 sheep to be conveyed to the above-men-tioned place. After the sheep bad been put on board, Mr. A. McLean arrived from that locality, and informed Mr. Corbin that the natives stated, while he (Air. McLean) was there, that they would not allow Corbin to land the sheep. Mr. Corbin bad only learned a little before that the natives bad broken the agreements of the other parties, as well arranged as his, and returned the deposits. Taking this into consideration, he deemed it prudent to re-land the sheep, and he on the safe side, although at a considerable cost. Hyderabad Road. —At a Public Meeting of persons interested in the formation of the above road, held at the Royal Hotel, the following resolutions wore put and carried ; This meeting further prays the Provincial Government to place the sum of £SOO, instead of £:100, on the estimates for making Hyderabad road ; and, as the owners of more than twenty chains of said road have agreed to allow any ((uantity of their hill land to be used for the purpose of forming such road, we see no reason why the road should not be at once commenced. That the Chairman be requested to communicate with the owners of the sections adjacent to the proposed lino of road so as to be certain of their consent previous to the next mooting of the Council ; and that he obtain from the Director of Works an estimate of the cost of making a road fourteen feet wide on the line laid down on the Government map, shewing the depth of water along the said line; also an csthnateof the proposed road as suggested at a former meeting. That a list be opened for the purpose of raising subscriptions from the proprietors of the adjoining sections, and others interested, in aid of the funds required for the proposed road—the same to he added to the amount to be received from the Government. Captain Munu to solicit subscriptions. That William Colenso, Esq., hai ing liberally offered a subscription of £2O towards this work, be requested to act as Treasurer.
