THE OTAGO GOLD FIELDS.

The Goia> Escoht.— The usual weekly Escort arrived on Thursday afternoon, bringing down 10,310 ounces of gold, of which 1,587 ozs. 13 dwt. was from Waitahuna, and 8,722 ozs. 5 dwts. from Tuapeka. This is less than former escorts, but not less than was to be anticipated—considering the disturbance of industry caused by. the late rushes to Waipori and elsewhere. It is satisfactory to find that the Waipori field is beginning to make a return far the labour expended on it. On Thursday evening the first parcel of gold from the Waipori reached Dunedin in the charge of Constable Garvey. The quantity was 180 ounces, winch, added to the quantity received from the older gold fields, brings the total escort for the week to 11,3‘J0 ounces. REPORTED NEW RUSH. FINDING OF A FOURTEEN OUNCE NUGGET (From the Otago Wiive*s, Feb. }.) The intelligence from the Gold ficldsTast night was of more than iisual importance. A . new discovery was reported some six miles from Tuapeka, towards the Waipori. A man came in to Gabriel’s with the intelligence, bringing witli him 9 oz. which he obtained olf the bottom of the first hole he sunk. From another place hearer the Waipori we have intelligence of a nugget being found weighing between fourteen and fifteen ounces. A poor man was killed at Gabriels by the accidental breaking of the windlass. Ho was being pulled up his shaft by his mate when the windlass gave way, precipitating him to the bottom. The barrel of the windlass fell down the shaft, striking him on the head and killing him on the spot. We are informed that “ good ” gold has been struck in a shaft, at Weathers one’s, at a depth of 160. The bottom is not yet reached, but it is expected to be touched in a clay or two.
