LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

Naeiee Races. —A meeting of persons interested in the forthcoming races was held on Tuesday night last, at the Golden Fleece Hotel, for the purpose of making the necessary arrangements. There was a goodly muster, and Mr. C. Allen was called to the chair. The election of the stewards and officers was the first business, and the following gentlemen were chosen. Stewards— Major Douglass, 14th Regt., Capt. Vivian, 14th Eegt., Capt. Harman, 14th Regt., and C. Allen, J. D. Ormond, G. S. Cooper, W. Rich, B. Ferrers, B. D. Danvers, Esquires. Judge—St. C. Ingles, Esq. Starter—Mr. Rich. Treasurer —Mr. W. Parker. Secretary . Clerk of the Course—Mr.

F. E. Hamlin. Some discussion then took place as to where the races should be held, whether on the former course, at the Green Meadows, or at Clive, where it was said there was some good ground. This point was settled by the following resolution—- “ That a meeting of the stewards be held at the Golden Fleece, on Saturday next, at 8 o clock p.m., to consider the best place for holding the races, and to report thereon to the next public meeting. 55 The following was also carried—“ That the next public meeting be held at the Golden Fleece Hotel, on Wednesday, the sth of February, at 8 o’clock p.m.” The meeting then broke up. .£2lO have been already subscribed. Leasing of Native Lands. —ln another column appears the letter addressed and sent to the Maori chiefs of the district, in reference to the leasing of native property. The letter in question was drawn up by Mr. T. H. Fitzgerald, and approved of by the committee appointed. Another letter, of a similar nature, is to be sent, if not already on its way, to the chiefs of the Wairoa district. Whatever the popular opinion may be of the native leasing scheme, a fair trial of its operation seems, at all events, near at hand.
