Presentation to Captain Mum.—During the last passage of the Maori to Otago, she unfortunately encountered very terrific weather, causing the ship to strain considerably, which entailed much anxiety on Captain Muir, he, however, succeeded in prosecuting his voyage, and brought his ship safe back to Newcastle. The underwriters in the Sydney Marine Office, ever ready to recogthe port, determined to afford Captain Muir some tangible proof of the estimation in which his conduct has been regarded, and in conjunction with Messrs. Bingle and Co., the owners of the Maori, presented him with a valuable gold ],watch and chain,'bearing the following I inscription. “ Presented to Captain John Muir of the barque Maori by Samuel Smythe, Esq., on behalf of the underwriters in the Sydney Marino Assurance Office and'Messrs. Binglo and Co., owners, as a testimonial of their approbation of his conduct in protectingjtheir mutual interests during a tempestuous voyage to New Zealand, in July, 1861.” The presentation took place on Saturday last, at tho Sydney Marine Office. Mr. Charles Kemp,’ in handing the souvenir to Captain Muir, expressed the pleasure he experienced in being the medium by which the underwriters were anxious to recognise his valuable services, shewing that steady integrity of purpose and perseverance would ever meet with their proper reward, and he trusted that such a bright example of courage and ability would not be lost sight of by captains who might be placed iu a similar position.
