WELLINGTON.
SrPEEiIE Cottet.— The usual quarterly sittings of this Court were opened on Monday, the 2nd inst., before his Honor, Mr. Justice Johnstone, ■who, in his charge to the Grand Jury, commented freely on the cases -which would be brought before them. On the 3rd December, James Collins took his trial for the murder of William Alexander, on the Ist of November last. The particulars of the case have already appeared in our columns. After hearing the evidence, the Judge carefully summed up, and the Jury, after a short absence from Court returned, with a verdict of guilty. The prisoner declining to say anything why sentence of death should not be passed upon him, his Honor the Judge put on the black cap, and in the most solemn and impressive manner passed upon the prisoner the extreme sentenoK of the lavv. On the 4th instant, Wednesday, John Hnghes, surveyor, was found guilty of feloniously and maliciously maiming an entire horse, the property of the Messrs. Hunter, and sentenced to six mouths’ imprisonment with hard labor.
