By the kindness of Captain Thompson, of the schooner Mary Thompson, we are in possession of a copy of the Otago Witness of the 9th instant. It contains little of interest. The Lord Worsley, however, reported as having arrived in Wellington on Friday last from Otago, brings the information that the escort had arrived in Dunedin with 35,100 ounces of gold. Notwithstanding this groat increase in the returns, owing we believe to fresh discoveries, fine weather, and the arrival of more diggers at the scene of operations, the distress at Dunedin had not much diminished, and numbers were leaving, and more would /gladly do so if they had the means. We refer our readers to a letter received by a gentleman of this Province from a steady and industrious person lately in his employ. Jfoutero, Nov. 6, 18(51. Dear Sir,—l had no opportunity of writing sooner to you, as I was very unsettled, and travelled about from one digging to another, spending money and gelling nothing. 1 soon found out my mistake in leaving you. About a month ago, 1 was in Nelson, waiting for the steamer to come back again, to the Ahuriri, when I met a German fanner, who asked me if I would go and work for him. lam very comfortable now, and have made my mind up to buy some land here, and get settled and take a wife, of which there arc plenty here. If you get any letters for mo, would you oblige by sending them. Yours respectfully,
