Wk understand that steps are being taken for the purpose of erecting a Fenced Bathing ’place just beyond Murm’s. The Subscription List for the admission of members is lying at the stores of Messrs. Newton, Irvine, £ Co. Painful Occurrence. —Mr. W. Boornmu, Solicitor, of this town, has now been missing for a considerable number of days. Nearly three weeks ago he left Napier for Mr. Worgau's station at Waipuna. Shortly after his arrival there, he began to exhibit that kind of insanity which generally succeeds a course of intemperance. On the evening of Saturday, the 2nd inst., he seemed much better, and went, to bed apparently more compose; 1 .. During the night, it appears he relapsed into his former unhappy condition of mind, for after observing that he heard the cries of a drowning woman, he rushed from the house at half-past 11, having on only his shirt and boots. Notwithstanding the most diligent search, no traces of him have been seen, and from tlie vicinity of Mr. Worgau's house to the bush, the numerous streams in the neighbrhood, and the broken nature of the country generally, but little hope is entertained of finding him alive. Local Improvements. —Wc feel somewhat proud to be the first to pass over the short cut only just, effected between the Spit and the Town, commencing at one of the turnings of the Shakspeare Road and Waghorn Street. We were just congratulating ourselves on our dry boots, the distance we had saved, and the rate of the efflux tide, from the “ intake.” which we estimated at from two to three knots an hour, when we were unexpectedly “ stuck up,” by some of

Total Abstinence Socr.'/ry.— A lecture announced for Thursday last was not delivered. Mr. France occupied the chair, and informed the audience that 1 >r. Venn, who had promised the lecture, had been unexpectedly called away. On a future occasion, we believe, the lecture will he given. Li-xtuke. —Last Thursday, a lecture was given by by Mr. H. L. Sheet, in the Council Chamber, the subject being “ Our Provincial Politics—past, present, and future.” The attendance was rather thin, and the lecture could not he considered successful.
