LOCAL INTELLIGENCE

The Nomination of candidates for the additional town seats in the Provincial Council will take place this day at twelve, at the Resident Magistrate’s Court House. Mr. Triphook has been some time in the field ; Messrs. 11. L. Sheet and Edwards will offer themselves, and we believe Mr. Colenso will be brought forward, so that there is every appearance of a contest.

Death from Drinking.— On Sunday last about eight o'clock p.m., a private soldier of No. 3 company of the 14th Regt., named Ellis Mostyn, was brought to the barracks and placed in the guard-roomin a state of intoxication, where ho was visited by those on guard during the night. On visiting him between three and four in the Corning he was found apparently dead, and-Staff As-sistant-Surgeon Grace, having been sent for, was of opinion death had probably occurred an hour or an hour and a half previously. After a post mortem examination, Dr. Grace attributed death to have resulted from engorgement of the lungs (pulmonary apoplexy), preventing the. necessary aeration of the blood. At an inquest held on Monday, at the Royal York Hotel, before the coroner, T. Hitchings, Esq., the jury returned a verdict that deceased came to his death from pulmonary apoplexy, occasioned by drinking.
