ARRIVAL OF THE “STORM BIRD,” WITH UNFAVOURABLE NEWS FROM THE OTAGO GOLD DIGGINGS.
By the s.s. Storm Bird, Captain Malcolm, which arrived early yesterday (Sunday) morning from Wellington, which port she left on Friday evening last, we have news from Otago to the 21st instant. The accounts from thence are unfavorable, notwithstanding that the escort had brought in 11,281 ounces ; for the influx of diggers is too great for the extent of payable ground, and hundreds are not making rations, as will be seen from our correspondent’s letter below, and on the correctness of which our readers may rely. The Bird has not brought the English mail, as it had not reached Sydney when the Prince Alfred left ; but we understand that it arrived at Adelaide on the 11th, and will be brought on by the Lord Ashley. A Wellington Arm had purchased the Lady Bird steamer. The passengers by the Storm Bird are:— His Honor Judge Johnston, Rev. H. W. St. Hill, Mrs. St. Hill, Miss Tanner, Mr. and Mrs. Kinross and servant, Messrs. R. 11. Strang, William, Lyon, G. Hunter, A. Browne, J. Watt, J. Howell, W. Faulkner, H. Sharp. Tlie ship Sovereign of the Seas was totally destroyed by fire in Sydney harbor, on September jLO, with I,GOO tons of inward cargo on board.
