LOCAL INTELLIGENCE
The Tea Meeting.— ln our last we briefly noticed the tea meeting in aid of the Church Fund of the Wesleyan body, in Napier. As we then remarked it was exceedingly well attended, there being about 230 persons present, who seemed greatly gratified with the entertainment, more especially the musical part, which was rendered in a manner at once creditable and praiseworthy. The able and masterly manner in which Mr, Worgan presided at the harmonium and pianoforte was deservedly noted, as were also Mr. Eobottom’s performances on the flute and violin; and the vocal endeavours of Miss Hatton, Mr. Aaronson, and the other vocalists wore received by the company with rapturous applause. Great praise also is due to Mr. Robjohn for his exertions in conducting the practices of the various pieces to so successful an issue. The thanks of those present are due and would no doubt be readily accorded to the ladies presiding at the trays, and generally to the promoters of the entertainment, by which we believe about <£3o will be added to the Church building fund. ° Boat Accident. —On Tuesday last as William Thompson (better known asPompey) was leaving the Harbour in a whale boat for the coast with two other men, a squall caught them while in the act of setting, sail, and capsized the boat. The men only escaped drowning by clinging to the keel, until they were rescued by Mr. Pilot Murray, who seeing their danger made all dispatch to their assistance, and succeeded in landing them safely near the bluff. “The War in Taranaki, 1860 & 1861” from the pen of Mr. Grayling, one of the Taranaki Volunteers, will shortly be published. In the author we recognise “W.1.G.” whose letters to the Taranaki Herald and other New Zealand journals were no doubt read with interest during the time of hostilities at Taranaki, and, from his being an eyewitness of the chief scenes in that, unhappy struggle, we may anticipate an interesting little book.
