The Schooners Surprise and Pole Star, both from Auckland, were at anchor early on Saturday morning last, the former having left on the Monday, and the latter on the Tuesday previous. The Surprise brought down the Representatives for this Province in the General Assembly. Both vessels have made a quick run down, the Pole Star having accomplished it in 34 days and the Surprise in 4J. The latter had on board 31 passengers for
the Otago diggings, for which place she sailed on Sunday afternoon, having little or no room for more passengers. By the Pole Star we have Auckland papers to the 17th inst. From our advertising columns it will be seen that tht Sea Serpent, so long plying between hers and Wellington, is laid on the berth for Otago. It is not, however, the intention of Captain Blair to neglect the Wellington trade. Means will be tak,en to maintain a regular communication With Pert Nicholson, and judging from what Captain Blair has done to preserve the communication for the last seven years, we do not doubt, despite the attractions of Port Chalmers, we may still depend upon a regular trade with Wellington. The Aquila arrived here on Friday night, after a quick run of fourteen days. She brings the following passengers:—Thomas W. Dowson, Henry Beukers, Robt. Baxter, Eobt. Andrew, John Callaghan, Chas. Wright, J. Roger Hill. Captain Austin reports that there is no business doing, and that all the Europeans in the Fijis would willingly leave if they could pay their passages thence. This corroborates a letter on the Fijis we publish elsewhere.— -Southern Cross, September 17.
