LOCAL INTELLIGENCE

The Tea Meeting in aid of the Funds for the erection of a new Wesleyan Church took place last evening in the Council Chamber, and was very numerously attended. After tea had been disposed of, the meeting was addressed by the Chairman, the Rev! Mr. Barclay, and the Rev. Mr. Shaw, interspersed by several musical compositions, which were given very effectively, and received rapturously by v those present. We regret not having time for a more lengthened report. The proceedings terminated about eleven. The following is the musical programme : Zion (chorus) Solo on the flute accompanied by Piano Forte, (Mr. Robottom) “ I waited patiently” (chorus) “ He wipes the tear from every eye” (Miss Hatton) “ How beautiful upon the mountains” (chorus) Hallelujah chorus (instrumental) Solo on the harmonium (Mr. Worgan) “ I’ll wash my hands in innocency” (chorus) Violins accompanied on Piano-forte by Mrs. Welch “ Beautiful Star” (Mr. Aaronson) A musical narrative (Mr. Robottom) “ Sound the loud timbrel (chorus) Rapier Militia. —Captain Charles Lambert has been gazetted Captain and Adjutant of the above corps. Date of commissions, 22nd August, 1861. District Court. —The A T ew Zealand Gazette contains a warrant fixing times for holding District Courts at Wellington, Napier, Wanganui, Nelson, Marlborough, and the Hutt, by which it is directed that the District Court of Hawke’s Bay shall be held on the 3rd Wednesday in every alternate month, commencing on the 20th day of November next. Preservation of Game.— By the Bill introduced by Mr. Stafford in the House of Representatives no deer, hare, swan, partridge, plover, rook, starling, thrush, and blackbird shall be taken or killed before the 28th February, 1870, and then only during the months of March, April, May, June, and July. No pheasant or quail shall be taken or killed except during those months in any year. No wild ducks or teal shall be killed in any year? except from the months of March to August. The penalties for the breach of the Act shall be enforced on conviction before one or more Justices of the Peace by a fine of not less than two nor exceeding twenty pounds in respect of any male animal or bird ; and of not less than four nor exceeding forty pounds in respect of any female animal or bird ; one half such fine to be paid to the person or persons instrumental in convicting an offender.
