THE HAWKE’S BAY TIMES. NAPIER, THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 1861.
The arrival of the Christina from Wellington furnishes us with most important information from the gold fields at Otago. Great excitement existed in Otago and Wellington, and indeed in all places where the intelligence had been received. A perfect rush had taken place at Otago, and further particulars we give elsewhere. Previously to the last accounts received, we had heard that many of our working men intended, as the warm weather approached, to leave here for Otago, yet we cannot but think that, although the fact seems undeniable that, large quantities of gold exist in the South, a little delay, until a more settled state of things is brought about, and further particulars are known, would be the best policy at present.
