An Appeal for Goodwill
"A NEW PIONEER," ' \
Sir, — There are now two years before we New Zealanders celebrate tbe centenary of our country. Already various committees have been set up to bririg into being an Exhibition which will bring honour and credit to the progress that has been accomplished by all* sort* and conditions of people who have laboured here since the early days. May I take the liberty of suggesting that the year 1938 be taken as a start-. ing point foi" all New Zealanders to go into committee on the important question of how to co-ordinate and consolidate the innumerable thoughts of kincl- ' liness and consideration that exist in the numerous homes of our land — these thoughts that cannot be shown behind chromium plate and shining glass— these thoughts that we, as New Zealanders, find difiicult to express for fear of ridicule. The future welfare of New Zealand lies above the level of party strife and sectional criticism. The united response that came with the outbreak of the Great War shows what can be done. Could we not recall some of that enthusiasm for the needs of peace? Could we not in 1938 clear out in the house of our minds that room lumbered up with prejudice, resentment and perhaps even despair and slash boldly across the door "New Zealand." And if, at first, we have to stand in the centre of an empty space, let there be no speck of niggling doubt to mar the j furniture that one day will help us to Y repose in coihfort amid the variationv l of purposeful life.— Yours, etc., J
