Shops to Close From Saturday to Tuesday: Late Night To-night

With another holiday period extending over three days, durln* which the shops will be closed, shoppers were busy this morning preparing for the second "break". There was a big crowd in the main business area this morning and early this afternoon, and the hundreds of womenfolk were well* laden with parcels, containing, in the main, household provisions for the week-end. Shops will remain open till a lats hour this evening, and Heretaunga street from Hastings street to Nelson street and intersecting gtreett between Eastbourne and Queen streets, will be closed to vehicular, traffic as from 6.30 o'clock te-night. Similar arrangements for the controlling of the barrlcades and tha traffic generally as were mdopted on * Christmas Evc will be followed thlt evening. Apart from being able to havo the free run of Heretaunga street for the usual celebration of the ' coming of the New Year, residents and visitors to Hastings this year will have the opportunity of participating in. a community celebration of the annual event by assembling at Nelson Park, where a gala fete liastbeen arranged. The programme provides for a special celebration of the old customary "ringing" of the years.
