War On Rust.
Modern sand-blasting equipment h being used by the Public Works Department in a successful war on six year:^ rust that has accumulated on the many tons of steel for the Cascade Creelc railway bridge in the Buller Gorge, where it lay exposed to the weather during the time while construction was stopped. The surface of the giant steel girclers for the bridge, and the smaller cross beams or transoms, are being cleaned down to the bare steel by the sand-blasting plant. Directed through a special hose nozzle by a hooded operator, a terrific blast of sand impelled by air compressed to 1001b. a square inch tears the rust awa^ with ease, and in a few hours covers an area of steel that an. army of men could not deal with half so effectively by hand in as many weeks.
