REVIEW OF SATURDAY'S FIELDS
(B 7'
Tlie summer meeting of t* e Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, to be lield on the Hastings Raeeeourse on Saturday and Monday, has drawn excellent fields for the first day, which should furnish thrilling raeing. The track was never in better condition, and the lawns and surroimdings are in fine order. With the added facilities offered the public there is every reason to anticipate an increase in all the receipts, as the acceptances liave already sent the ball rolling in this direction. The transport arrangements, as advertised elsewhere, will be found suitable to all. The betting will be on he single-pool system.
Following is a summing-up of tha seven erents: 12.30: MAIDEN EACE Enfin has yet to earn a place, but of late has shown improvement. The braket, Eed Witch — Power Chief, will carry Mr G. D. Beatson's colours, an™ should give ' a good account of themSelves, although it is possible that Power Chief may be reserved for the next event. Inheritance is not recommended, as he has not raced for some time. Oha ran a creditable race of Monday last. Eed Coclcade has only to improve a little to b® dangerpus. Guiding Light has yet to show form. Triplex raced only so-so on Boxing Day. Tommy Atkins, with four seconds on end to his credit, has something on his side. Hastings West has speed, but no raeing oxperience, as this is her first st.art with the colours up. Wilful Lady has no form to encourage rnonetary support. Anini ran fairly well at Waipukurau and will be favoured by the shorter distance. Singing Gol-d has a couple of minor places to his credit in Gisborne. Hunting Mint is having her first race. The distance may be a little too short for Mahutai. Master Hector and Eastern Night have little form to recommend them. Flame Queen, tho last name in the book, jnay carry heavy support. The favourites may be FLAME QUEEN, TOMMY ATKINS and ANINI. 1.15: OTATAEA HIGHWEIGHT Umpire ran two solid races at Waipukurau. Skyway is expected to do better than his fourth in the Hack Cup on Saturday. He is not the sort one would select as a highweight caudidate, yet he has won bracelets. Contact might find the distance a . little too far in this, his first up after a spell. Buster Brown ran well enough at the Manawata meeting. On his running at Waipukurau Gironde has to be passed over, King'e Hope is one that may be termed an "iffer.,il Parry has not come up to expectations. Lady Wessex should be all the better for her Manawatu trip. She scored at this meeting twelve months back. Power Chief is an outside proposition. Most rnonetary support may be afforded BUSTEE BEOWN, SKYWAY and UMPIEE. 2.0: HAVELOCK FLYING HANDICAP Hack conditions. Fossicker should find 9.9 easier to carry over this distance than what he did at Waipukurau over a mile, when he rau a creditable fourth. Sardius may be in need of a race after his lengthy spell. Contact, if started in this race in preference to the one previoiis, should have a. better chance of success, With a good horseman on top Taro would be labelled dangerous. Colleeq. Gain cannot be discarded, Lady Chat is recognised as a hack above the average, although she has only a maiden event to her credit. She has not raced since Masterton, so may be in need of a public outing. Lindrum has been a little disappointing lately. Euinette, who was not started at Waipukurau, at 71bg. above the minimum, reads well, Last Monday Flying Comedy did not receive the best of starts, and then after that did not enjoy a good passage. Marsyas ran pporly on Monday, but never races badly at Hastings. The remaining trio do not appeal. In the absence of LINDEUM, the three that may appeal rnost are LADY CHAT, FOSSICKEE and TAEQ, 2.46; NEW YEAE HANDICAP. The top weight, Hunting Cat, should strip a fit horse after his Manawatu raeing. He won the last time be started at Hastings— last October. Gay Huater rau a splendid race on Tnesday, beating all but Lowenberg in the chief event at Awapuni. Soho ran a splendid Tace at Woodville the second day, but at Palmerston in his one start (Tuesday) was never prominent. He now meets Gay Hunter on the same terins as on Tuesday. Limbohm, at the spring meeting of the Napier Park Eacing Club, at the finish of the chief event, separated the first and third horses, Legatee and 0ay Hunter. This will • be hip first race for some time. Pladie was very unludky at Waipukurau, where he finished second. Buster Brown, if not started in the Highweight, would have to he reckonfed with, as he was second to Eoyal Minstrel in the Waipawa County Hapdicap last month. Wananga has been raeing consistantly, and on the minimum, is another than enters the argument. It is a very even field. The favourites cnav be GAY HUNTEE, SOHO and HUNTING CAT. 3.30: JUVENILE HANDICAP, A very even lot of two-year-olds. Eakahanga won twice at the Manawatu meeting. Daina Tetrix has started four tinles this season for two seconds, a third, and an also started. Centrepoise 1nay not have the raeing condi. tion of some > ' the opposition. Merry !3imon should ho able to give a firstclass account of liimself. The running of Imogen at Wninukurau was bolow expectations. Lady Furst is a promising young lady, and with plenty of sizc
should one day develop into a useful performer. She has been galloping much better of late, and is definitely on the improve. Laughing Song, although third on Boxing Day, did not run up to track form, but now back to her home track may do better. The favourites may be EAKAHANGA, LADY FUEST and DIANA TETEIN, 4.15: WAIPATU HANDICAP. Hack Conditions. Granvale was not produced on Monday. He has a big job in front of hira with 9.0. Skyway should not lack support. Seyfried is sure to strip a better horse than on Monday last, when he finished second. Impersonator won solidly at Waipukurau to come at the right end. Hamarin, on appearances, seems back to form. The poor running of Tullamore at Waipukurau is diflicult to fathom. Tkala was another at the same meeting that did not live up to track work, She is now being tried over a middle distance, and being from a Limond mare may do better than at sprinting. Agog opened his winning account the other day. Haile Selassie was so badly left the other day that no line was got as to his form. Blue Shirt has done some attractive work in private in his time only to disappoint. Hornpipe is not fancied, but Clavereourt, if ridden with judgment, is an outside possibilitv. Larwood makes up the field. Most investments may be made on SEYFEIED, IMPEKSONATOE and AGOG! 5.0: STEWAEDS ' HANDICAP. Pakauui wcn well on Tuesday at Awapuni, but he may do his New Year raeing at Tauherenikau. Mata Hari, back to a lower grade than what she had to put up with at Awapuni, will be more in her element. Brunhilde won the N.Z. Oaks and beat all but the winuer, Alma, in the C.J.C. Stewards'. Slippery may do better than on Monday last, as the track will not be quite so kard. Gasman hardly raced up to expectations on Monday, but the furlong shorter may be more to his liking. Bunfight is most disappointing, but she has the ability to do the triek if in the mood. Eecovery may be looked to from BEUNHILDE, MATA HAEI and SLIPPEEY.
