Australians Defeat the Germans OVATION FOR BUDGE

(Received 30, 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 29. At tennis Australia defeated Germany by three rubbers to one. Quist defeated Henkel, 6-^2, 6 — 4, 6—2. Von Cramm defeated Bromwich 6 — 2, 7—5, 10—8. In an exhibition match Budge defeated Crawford, 7 — 5, 6 — 1, 6 — 2. An overflowing crowd of 12,000 saw a splendid day's tennis. Quist forced the play throughout against Henkel and maintained an immaculate length on his drives. Budge was accorded an ovation. He was very keen and served extremely fast. He scored numerous aces with backhand placements. Crawford, with characteristic steadiness, thoroughly. tested the American. The von Cramm-Bromwich tie was a real thriller. Von Cramm, with acutelyangled backhand and forehpnd drives, scored many clean winners, He was the first player profitably to take the net against Bromwich, who staged a grarjd recovery. from 1—4, "to 6 — 5 in the third set, in which he saved four match points.
