Basque President's Appeal To Britain .PARIS, Dec. 28. The Basque President, Senor Aguirre, said that he had successfully appealed to Britain to use her influenee to prevent the execution of 1000 Basques, the rebels having decided to stay the executions. Senor Aguirre added, however, that the insurgent atrocities continue without respite. Another 1000 persons have been sentenced to death, and the executions during December total 147. Ten thousand prisoners are crowded in the Bilbao gaols. Garotting is also~ prevalenf, this barbarity being unknown in the Basque country until the rebels arrived. He said that the insurgent leader, General Franco, intended to reduce the Basque population and plant colonies from other parts of Spain because he knew that he could never conquer the Basque spirit. The Spanish Republican Defence Minister, in a statepient made through the London Embassy, denies that the rebel blockade is effective, and states that the danger from mines exists only in the imagination.
