Ely Culbertson's Methods

LONDON, Dee. 8. I read that Mr Ely Culbertson, who has just returned to London from a short visit to New York, has an income of £20,000, says a writer in the Daily Telegraph. While this may be an overstatement, it is safe to say that he manages to niake bfidge pay very handsomely indeed. He does it in the following ways, which I give in order oi lucrativeness: 1. Sydnieated newspaper articles. 2 Books. ' 3. Crockford's in New York. 4. Lectures. 5. Profits from playing-cards and bridge accessories. His newspaper articles are syndicated throughout America. Papers in Canada and the other Donunious also talce them. A s regards books Mr Culbertson always produces one w year, sometimes two. All are best sollers, as they make their predecessors obsolete. He also publjsjies summaries of his text-books and a Self'teacher, The keeu Culbertsonian, I presume, studies tlie lot. Then Mr Culbertson has a finanqial interest in New York's Crockford's. He and Mrs Culbertson have usually played twice a week there during the winter, taking on all comers at a dollar a 100. Mr Culbertson, I believe, does nqt make any profits from hig fees for teachers' certificutes owing to the high overheads tho organisation' for thjs requires. He keeps it going to reveut uncertified teachers dlserediting his system. Mr Culbertson plaqes a Napoleonic valut on ppestige. His expenses m other direetions are heavy. Ho travels continually. He has a research iaboratory where earqest young students have tabulated thoushnds of hands. His seeretaries piight be degpribed as a secretariat, Thov repljr ±o bridge queriei, " ,
