PALMEESTON N., This Day. . Appearing before Justiees of the Peace in Court to-day, Bobert Jules de Cleene, labourer, aged 40, pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying on ihe business of a bookmaker at Awapuni course yesterday. Deteetive-Sergeant Meiklejohn stated that the defendant was seen on th out$ide stand where a number of people approached him and he made entries on slips. Subsequently- Detective Bayliss had no difficulty in laying a 5/- bet onSunee in the Cup. When searched defendant had betting slips with a number of entries, also £18 11/7 in money. Deteetive Meiklejohn added that six years ago De Cleene had been found in pcssession of betting slips at Feilding, and was warned off,^ though not proseeuted. Last New Year he was seen operating on the Marton course and warned off. He had been removed from other meetings for a similar reason. and appeared to haA^e had quite a good spin. The defendant was a shearer by occupation, and apparently went to Awapuni to "sheaY* punters." The Bench: You are liable to a fine of £500 or two years' imprisonment. Defendant: Two years would be tough. A fine of £25 was imporsed.
