HANGCHOW FALLS

Japanese Columns Storm Gates WAR SCARE IN PEKING (Received 27, 9.3o a.m.) ' SHANGHAI, Dec. 25. Japanese sources report that Japanese troops occupied Hangchow at 8 a.m. and drove out the Chinese forees from positions in the West Lake area. An all-night march across a mountaln enabled the Japanese to oceupy the highlands overlooking Hangchow. Other columns penetrated five miles. from the north-west of the city. Four columns stormed the Hangchow main gates and entered the city. A Peking message says newspapers sold like hot cakes as the result of vem dors' cries: "England, Japan and America in war." Apparently the scare was based on a Domei news agency 's report of' the British discussions on naval reinforcaments and America 's reported movcment of destroyers on the Pacific coast, which the Domei agency considers incomprehensible and sensational, cre'ating an unnecessary, eerious, warlike atmosphere. The Japanese have crossed the Yellow river in the vieinity of Tsinan and obtained a foothold in the province of Shangtung.
