Tolaga Bay Tragedy

GISBORNE, This Day. A sad fatality occurred at Tolagi Bay late on Christmas Day, when Charles William Ward, aged about 31, single, was drowned in the Uawa rivsr. Deceased who was a farm labourer, was spending the Christmas holiday# with Mr and Mrs T. Dodds at Wharekaka. At 6 p.m. Mr Ward, who was unable to swim, went into the river for a bathe, taking with him Mr Dodds 's young cMldren. Mr Dodds was engagei in setting a net for mullet nearby and was not aware that Ward had got into difficulties. The children with whom Mr Ward was bathing thought that deceased was trying to amuse them in the water and called ont to their father. Mr Dodds glanced casually towards where the bathers were and then looked away. When he turned around again Mr Ward had disappeared.
