The King in the course of his Christmas broadcast said: "The Queen and I fesl we want ° to send you all 'a further word oi gfatittide for the love and loyalty yoii gave us from every quarter of the Empire during this unforgettable year. We have promised to try to be worthy of your trust. This is a pledge we will always keep. "As we look baek on the year now closing, we see over parts of the world shadows of enmity and f ear, but let us turn to the message Christmas brings of peace and goodwill. Let ns see that this spirit* shall in the end prevail. Everyone of us can help by making that immortal message the keystone of our daily lives and so to all ..of you, Whether at home among families as we are or in hospital or at posts carrying on duties that cannot be left undone, we send our Christmas gfeetings. "We Wish you, under God^s hless* ing, health and prosperity in the years that lie ahead.'' The King's broadcast had an excellent reception all over the world. The King's Christmas tree was inStalled at Westminster Ahbey and Was soon surrounded by a vast quantity of gifts. Toys were heaped up at the base and they are being sent to the Ohildren at Westminster Hospital. There were large congregations at Westminster Abhey and St. Paiil's. Their Majesties and members of the Eoyal Family motored through thiclc fog tO Sandringham Church. Six thousand gathered to Witness their going homO and the King, seeing the extent Of the assemblage decided to walk hack to Sandringham, a kindly gesture that was greeted. with cheers. Besides the general Christmas phrty at Sandringham it was the birthday of the Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra, the Duke of Kent's year-old daughter who reeeived extra presents from the Eoyal Family in" addition to Christmas gifts.
