BISHOP POMPALLIER
Bust for Auckland Cathedral CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS A feature of the New Zealand Catholic centennial celebrations, which will be inaugurated in Auckland on February 26, 1938, will be the installation in St. Patriclc's Cathedral of a life-size 'bronze bust of Bishop Pompallier, the first Catholic missionary in New Zealand and the central figure of Catholic history. The bust, which arrived from England last week, is the work of an Auckland sculptor, Mr William Wright, A.R.C.A., instruetor in modelling at the Elam Seliool ^ Art, 'and is at present on display at the Auckland Art Gallery. Mr Wright began the work early in the year at the request of Bishop Liston and the plaster model was sent, to England a few montlis ago to be cast in bronze. Bishop Pompallier is depicted in his episcopal attire with mantelleta, stole, skull-cap and pectoral Cross. The insignia of the Ivnight of the Holy Sepulchre and the Cross of the Lcgion pf Houour are also ahown, ■
