Robert Burns's Experience LONDON, Dec. 1. Influenza was "fashionable" 150 years ago, according to Robert Burns. In 1788 he caught the complaint. The letter descrlbing his wretchedness was sold in a London auction room thi:vveek for £105. He wrote: — "I am scarce able to hold up mv liead with this fashionable influenza: yet with only lialf a spark of life f would thank you. ' ' A reference to " a haughtv landlord to whom I owed what I coul dnot pay" shows his poverty at the time. Another Burns manuscript realised £380. Both were bought for the Burns Museum at Alloway.
