BOMB-PROOF SHELTERS

Precautions in Berlin BERLIN. Dee. 2. Twelve million German men ana women, organised in squads by Goneral Goering's Air Defence League, have almost flnished their work to enable every civilian in the country to go uuderground to bomb-proof and gas-proof shelters. Hundreds of thousands of bombproof shelters have been built mostly iu the cellars of houses, in addition to public shelters holding from flfty to 1000 persons. The public shelters have three sections — "de-gassing" room, community room, and first-aid statlon with beds. The shelters in moat cases are plain concrete rooms, heavily sand-bagged and protected by concrete. They are air conditioned and have supplies of "iron rations." All factories have bomb-proof shelters for their employees, as well as their own anti-gas and flre-fighting squads. Placards in the streets give details of the nearest public shelters. In large cities such as Berlin, Frankfort, and Munich placards reading "Follow the arrow to the nearest public shelter holding 550 persons" can be seen. During General Goering's recent air raid week all Berlin was sent underground Avithin four minutes of thc flrst syren alarm.
