What the Census Shows '■ 1 1 There were more single men • aqd women in 1936 than in 1Q26, acc'ording to census returns issued hy tho Government Statistician. It is shown that of those 21 years of age and oyer, 30.23 per cent of males had nevcr married up to the time of taking the census in 1926, but last year the percentage was 3.0.36. The proportion of adult females who had' never married also rose from 23.48 per cent to 24.28 per cent. The Qfficial comment upon the position is that in view of the Dominion's population the proportion of persons never married merits further examination. p is stated that the majority of persons married between the ages of 20 and 30 years. A comparison with the results of the preceding census shows that between those ages there wero definitely higher proportions and higher numbers unmarried in 1936 than 10 years earlier. Last year there were 47,451 unmarried mhles betWeAn the ages of 21 and 24, while those between 25 and 29 numbered 35,531. The total of 16,791 was shown' fo.r those between 30 and 34. Unmarried females between the ages of 21 and 24 last y6ar totalled 35,939. From 25 tp 29 years of age the hgure had dropped to 23,1^7, and again to 12,126 for those between 30 and 34, In Isoth the 1926 and the 1936 census totals the males predominated. For those over 16 years of age the figures were as follows: — 1926, males, 468,755; females, 449,019. In 1936, males, 547,228; females, 535,644.
