PENSIONS FOR M.P.'S
Committee's Report on British Scheme (Received 22, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 21. The committee 's report dealing with pensjons for members of the House of Commons has' been issued. Pensions will be confined to a sufliciently small number of beneficiaries to enable sums of a reasonable amouut to be available to former members with long service who have not adequate financial means, and who have been re.commended by a departmental committee. The report favours a systeoi of compulsory contributions by all members, and the suggested rate is £12 a year. The report -proposes that eligibility should be confined to present and future members with ten years' service who, except in cases of broakdown in health, should be- over 60 years at the termination of their enembersliip. The report suggests a pension such as will bring a^former member ;s income from all sources to £150 a year, and grants to dependents confined ~io pensions for widows of former members who die while in receipt of a pension. At the same time, it is suggested that the body administering the scheme should be allowed diseretion to meet cases of hardship.
